Kim Carnes isn’t exactly sold on JoJo Siwa’s latest musical project.
The Bette Davis Eyes singer recently shared her candid reaction to Siwa’s cover of her 1981 classic, making it clear she wasn’t entirely impressed by the reinterpretation.
“When I first saw my original performance placed side-by-side—and then overlaid with—a new version of ‘Bette Davis Eyes,’ my immediate reaction was that it felt too similar,” Carnes said in a July 14 statement to TMZ. “From the phrasing and tone to the subtle nuances—it just came across as a little too close to the original.”
Still, the 79-year-old singer emphasized that she doesn’t support any negativity aimed at the Dance Moms alum. Carnes expressed her commitment to encouraging fellow women in the industry.
“This industry can be harsh, and I firmly oppose the kind of hate and personal attacks I’ve seen online—whether they’re aimed at me, JoJo, or anyone else,” she added. “That sort of behavior has no place in music—or anywhere, really.”
